What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

IFS was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s and has since become one of the leading models of trauma-informed psychotherapy. It’s rooted in family therapy and systems theory, which sees the mind as a collection of interconnected parts—each with a purpose, a story, and a strategy.

IFS teaches us that:

  • Everyone has parts: Examples include the inner critic, the avoider, the people-pleaser, or the scared child.

  • All parts are welcome: Even extreme behaviors (e.g., self-sabotage, withdrawal) are protective, not pathological.

  • The Self is never damaged: Underneath it all, we each have access to a Self that is calm, curious, connected, and compassionate.

  • Healing comes through relationship(s): By helping parts unburden past pain, they can transform into supportive inner allies.

In short, IFS is not about eliminating symptoms—it’s about restoring balance and trust within your internal world. Here’s a sample ‘part’: a “perfectionist” part may have formed in response to shame or a high-pressure family system. A “numb” part may have helped someone survive religious trauma or rejection. The core of perfection is that it is protective against shame. 

What Does the Research Say?

IFS is supported by a growing body of clinical research. It has shown effectiveness in treating:

  • Complex PTSD and developmental trauma

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Substance use and eating disorders

  • Chronic shame and identity confusion

  • Self-esteem and relational issues

Studies published in journals like Frontiers in Psychology (2021) and Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment & Trauma (2020) show IFS enhances self-compassion, reduces PTSD symptoms, and supports emotional regulation.

It’s also being integrated into group therapy, couples counseling, and somatic trauma work, showing broad versatility across populations.

IFS doesn’t judge these parts—it listens to them, honoring their role and helping them release outdated burdens. It’s a liberating approach, especially for clients from marginalized or misunderstood communities.

What Happens in an IFS Therapy Session?

An IFS session is not about analyzing or fixing. It’s about befriending.

Your therapist may guide you to:

  • Identify a part that’s showing up (e.g., a critical voice, a shutdown response)

  • Explore how it feels in your body and what it’s trying to do for you

  • Connect with that part from your Self (not another part)

  • Learn its history and help it release pain, fear, or limiting beliefs

  • Invite that part to take on a new, more balanced role
